kookaburra in the garden

Today this young kookaburra
came to visit.  There were two of them flying around in the garden behind us and were being harassed by the magpies and noisy minas.  I am not sure what they were looking for but they didn't have a chance to settle.  Anyway I went outside to try to take a photo and one of the kookaburras landed on the veranda just above me.  It seemed to be quite a young bird and stayed still long enough to have its photo taken.  We often hear these iconic Australian birds in the early morning and at dusk but they are well camouflaged.  It is a real privilege to see them up close.

I have not yet seen a good view of a kookaburra, just one swiftly flying away!! But I have certainly heard them. LOL. Anne

I just love kookaburras! I think you mentioned seeing my "Birds in an Eltham Backyard" blog, where I wrote about all the kookaburras coming to our yard after the bushfires. We don't get crowds of them any more (they've gone back home since the forests have regrown), but there are usually two or three chortling away nearby during the day :-)

We used to sing a song about these birds as kids all the time. Don't know how we knew it but we did. xox Corrine

Nice to see your Kookaburra Dian. We've had a young one around in the last few weeks, a little unusual, as it's quite clear around the houses, as you know. They do visit from time to time, which always brings great excitement from us. I often wonder if they are laughing at us.......
